Maldives is an archipelago consisting of 1192 islands out of which only 192 islands are inhabited. And considering most of the resorts over here own their own island, you can imagine it be a perfect paradise for people flying in from metropolitan cities.
Maldives is expensive, whether it is food, accommodation , activities or even flights.
Save it for a special occasion , but do visit this paradise once in your lifetime. It is just 2 hours flight from Sri Lanka with great balmy climate and because of low sea depth, blue waters never fade till the horizon.
Either your hotel can be accessible by a speedboat within a 15-30 minute radius or a seaplane to another island between a 30-45 minute flight time. If you are going for a long duration , then I advise you to choose a resort accessible by seaplane since it is going to be more exclusive.
Because resorts accessible by speedboat maybe handy in saving time traveled from the airport, but you need to be ready to have a view of the Male city from one part of your resort, which seems like a sore thumb sticking out.
But seaplane only fly during daylight between 7 am to 4 pm, so plan accordingly.
We stayed at Taj Exotica which was a 20 minute speedboat ride from the airport as we were just there for 3 nights.

Taj Exotica
We were a big group of 7 people, and had opted for the 2 bedroom beach villa at this property. With Taj's brand and Asian hospitality, this place is full worth for your money.
It has a service class apart and you will pampered like a king. Also being a Vegetarian, I think it has one of the widest menu plus they do not mind preparing something off the menu, which tastes still great.
Breakfast is filling, and room is cleaned twice a day.
They have a big lagoon around them, and you can walk in the sea waist deep for around 200-300 metres. There is a small swing right in middle of the ocean which makes for a special photoshoot.
We had a private pool in our villa next to the beach, so we did not use the resort pool. But we had lunch at the poolside , and it was pretty well sized and managed.
There are sting rays and sharks feedings to marvel at.
You can rent free snorkel gear from the diving shop and use it on the beach.

Took the small 12 seater sea plane ride from the resort , up in the air, seeing the islands and landing back on the ocean. Interesting experience but too expensive.

If you wanna save some buck , then either do in Male city or do it in Goa or Thailand.
Just enjoy the beach, sea and sun over here.
In case you visit Taj Exotica , ask for the butler Hamdi... he is a gem of a person and took great care of us.
Personally I think its one of the best islands in Asia, but I still rank Caribbean better than this. But in terms of resorts and quality, its on par with the best. Would not mind going again and trying out a secluded resort far from Male and going by seaplane.
Heard a lot of deep sea diving trips in Maldives to see the flora and fauna below the sea.
