1.5 out of 5
One of the most hyped, most popular action film this summer failed to impress me.
I checked my ticket stud to see if by mistake I had not purchased a ticket of a rerun of Transformers ! Too much CGI of robots or Jaegers and dragons or Kaiju which looks like just out of Harry Potter series.
Written and directed by Del Toro who previously made watchable movies like Hell Boy series, Pan's Labybrinth failed to invoke human drama in this robots and dragons ensemble.
A gateway has opened between Kaiju's world and our world through the sea ( Surprisingly from the core of the earth). Kaiju's are bigger than Godzilla and they are evolving as years progress. To combat them humans created Jaegers which are operated by 2 pilots. The director was not confident of depicting enough meaty scenes with one person handling the robot hence fed us with a stupid explanation of neuro over load.
Nevertheless movie starts of well with pilots gearing up , working out the Jaegers and proceeding in the oceans to combat Kaijus. Once or twice is ok, but Del Toro continuously feeds us with Jaeger and Kaiju fights until we totally understand the different types of Kaijus & Jaegers to score 100% in a Pacific Rim recall test.
End is predictable as humans destroy the gateway and save the world from apocalypse.
Lead actor Charlie Hunnan looks wooden , the Japanese girl Rinko is bearable and gets the desired pathos, while the rest of the crew is strictly ok. Special mention for actors Charlie Day and Burn Gonman enacting the 2 quarreling doctors who are the only silver lining in this monotonous dish.
Unnecessarily hyped , maybe leave it for the DVD later on.
