4 out of 5
Treat this is as a standalone movie, and you will enjoy one of the best entertainers of 2015. Funny one liners, with terrific acting makes it a must watch movie.
Anand L. Rai loves to tell stories of small towns of India and their big hearts. His last film Ranjhanaa was one of the finest piece of cinema. So based on the worth of his last film rather than the average first installment of Tanu Weds Manu, you look forward to Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
He could have easily made this as separate movie, as there is no need for any continuation from the first movie. But he needed actors such as Kangana, Deepak , Madhavan, Jimmy, Swara to make this a classic comedy.
Himanshu Sharma has written a normal story but has etched out his characters beautifully. Tanu (Kangana) & Manu (Madhavan) have fallen out of marriage due to constant fights, and Tanu has returned to her parents. While Manu is left high & dry, he stumbles upon Datto (Kangana) & falls in love with her.
How his journey of falling in love with Datto, their adventures together, and how Tanu coming back for Manu forms the story. Super one liners by Himanshu Sharma are making these character famous, and by everyone , I mean every actor has a recall value after the movie.
The songs Banno , Ghani Bawri & Sadi Gali are already popular and helping the movie nonetheless.
Camera man Chirantan Das has captured the essence of northern India pretty well, and aided the brilliant storytelling of Anand L. Rai.
But its Kangana Ranuat especially in her portrayal of Datto as a Haryanvi athlete who wins the audience's heart. Never in the film you feel its Kangana acting out a character, you start believing this character his for real. That is the depth to the character she has given.
Full marks to the director for extracting such performance from her, and without her the movie would not have been worth it.
Also credit to Madhavan to playing a restrained performance and believing in the film is all about Kangana, and enacting a good supporting act.
Would not mind a next film by the director - all about Datto (Kanagan) and Pappi (Deepak)....
