3.5 out fo 5
The Wolverine is James Mangold finest work after a stupid blunder called Knight & Day.
You will invariably draw comparisons with X-Men : Wolverine (2009), and will rate this movie a tad below than its predecessor but stand alone this movie is worth watching.
Story is something nothing to praise about, its the action sequences & Hugh Jackman's exceptional portrayal of the brooding Logan which makes the film.
Logan is summoned to meet tycoon Yashida who is now on his death bed. On his funeral day, his grand daughter is attacked and from here the movie starts gaining momentum. The whole movie is escalates around the explosive action sequences during the chase and the power politics in a tycoon family.
While the first movie, established how Wolverine originated, this movie establishes his powers & idiosyncrasies. The power to smell danger, always trying to distance himself from troubles, but at the end of the day his sense of justice always overpowers him.
Starting off by teaching lessons to the hunters , then the fight sequence in Japanese temple , the movie shifts into right gears. The movie reaches an ultimare high especially in the bullet train sequence. Brilliant !
But after that, the graph goes down a bit involving drama between the Logan and the grand-daughter Mariko, and the climax sequence could not match the first half of the movie, thus leaving you a bit cold .
While Wolverine is not a perfect super - hero (He is technically a mutant !) , but its his short-comings which makes it nice drama action character.
The Japanese actors are passable but I wish they could have searched a more pleasant looking actor as a side-kick to Logan. Viper as the main villain is a bit cartoonish and does not make a needed impact.
The movie is a pleasure to watch only because of Wolverine's character graph and Hugh Jackman's brilliant acting. The continuous inner struggle, sense of justice over powering him, beating up the baddies despite being not 100% immortal, is exceptional depicted by Hugh Jackman.
Watch if you are fan of comic book movies, this wont be a total spoiler.
